Harvest Days 2007
We realize that the dog days of summer seem to be hovering right now, but before we know it the magical autumn season will be upon us. As many of you know, each year Chimney Rock Park observes the changing of seasons with our fun-filled and educational Harvest Days Celebration.
We are very excited to present this year’s programs, geared exclusively to students in grades 1–5. We have new programs and fascinating presenters lined up to ensure your class one of the most fulfilling programs ever! Join us for a toe-tapping, wing-flapping good time.
The Wonderful World of Reptiles
Like em’ or not, there are over 6,000 species of reptiles sharing the world with us today. These scaly creatures are often misunderstood and forgotten for the vital role they play in the ecosystem. Students will learn how important reptiles are to our local food chain and how that affects all of us. This interactive program will put some myths to rest and leave your students with a new appreciation for these cold-blooded creatures.
Appalachian Stories & Music
John Fowler has always been a favorite of teachers and students alike. His knowledge of the Carolina Mountains and foothills heritage comes alive in this unique program. From silly stories to instruments from the past, he’ll keep everyone on their toes. Make sure your students bring their rhythm because John’s sure to put it to work!
Hunters in the Sky
Throughout the ages, birds of prey have fascinated mankind. Unfortunately, some people have also viewed these magnificent birds with scorn because of their predatory instincts. Uncontrolled shooting, trapping, loss of habitat and pesticide poisoning have all combined to reduce their numbers drastically, some to the brink of extinction. Now, thanks to protective regulations and increased public awareness, many of these raptors are making dramatic comebacks. In this program you'll meet some live raptors and learn about their day-to-day struggle to survive in our constantly-changing world.
The Great Woodland Adventure
There’s nothing like a walk in the woods, especially one with giant toads and gigantic spiders! Well not REAL giant toads and spiders, but these are even better. The Park’s Great Woodland Adventure Trail is one of our best-kept secrets. Nestled at the top of the Meadows area, this trail was created with learning in mind. Join one of our Trail Rangers as they guide your class on a short (.6 mile) “walk in the wild.”
