In Chimney Rock Park's Outdoor Classroom, the pages of textbooks come alive!

2008 Registration Information

Programs are held the second Monday of the month; they begin at 10:30am and conclude at noon. Meet at the Nature Center.

Registration is required one week prior to program date. Call 800-277-9611 to register.

Cost per program is $12 per student; $11.50 for parents. Cost for Annual Passholders is $7 per student; no cost for parents. There may be additional charges for materials for some programs; please review individual program descriptions.

Skins & Skulls

Skins & Skulls – January 14, 2008

Welcome to the wild world of mammals. Through the use of skulls and study skins, students will learn what characteristics mammals have and how to identify common mammals of the area. Bring your problem-solving skills to unlock many of their secrets.

Where to mammals go during the winter? Who truly hibernates and who doesn’t? What about our scaly reptile friends or those slimy salamanders that make their homes at the Park? We’ll get to the bottom of winter’s sleepy slumber!

The Ultimate Scavenger Hunt – March 10, 2008

Join us for a scavenger hunt designed just for your students. This team-building activity will lead us on an adventure through the woods finding clues along the way. Everyone will be having so much fun they won’t realize how much they’re learning!

Beelicious! – April 14, 2008

Not only are bees pollinators of flowering plants, including fruits and vegetables, but thousands of species are parasites of other arthropods including pest insects. Bees are highly social insects who communicate with each other, relaying direction and distance of nectar and pollen sources used to create delicious healthful honey. We’ll learn all about these fascinating and helpful insects – prepare to “bee” amazed.

Nature Crafts – May 12, 2008

Mother Nature gives us many gifts throughout the year. We will use some of her gracious offerings to create crafts for your students to take home. This fun and inventive program will give your children basic instruction and help their inner artist to come out! *

Radical Raptors – September 8, 2008

The Park is going bonkers over birds and we’re going to join in the fun. Students will learn what defines a raptor and what threats they are facing in today’s world. Bring your cameras for an up-close encounter you’re sure to remember.

In celebration of the beautiful autumn season, we’ll take an interactive stroll on one of the Park’s five trails. Lace up your hiking boots and come ready to see what makes Chimney Rock Park such a magnificent destination.

Many people don’t ever get to see bobcats and skunks, but they are common animals that are all around us. Learn how to identify animals by the signs they leave behind and create your own animal track guide to take home. *

Do you think the only way to identify trees in your yard is by their leaves? Think again! It may seem unbelievable, but determining trees by characteristics such as their bark, twigs, odors and growth habits can be just as easy. We’ll learn how to ID trees in winter when their foliage is missing.
