2024 Fall Homeschool Day

Fall into outdoor learning and adventure at Chimney Rock!

Wednesday, November 13, 2024

Note: Due to inclement weather, this event has been rescheduled to Wednesday, November 13.

Fall Homeschool Day at Chimney Rock is the perfect way to embrace the outdoors and welcome the fall season. Start the day with hands-on programs, learning all about the amazing ways nature transforms in the fall. Afterward, enjoy an afternoon exploring the park – there is so much to discover, and you might just spot something amazing!

Morning Programs – Orientation begins promptly at 9:45 am

Predator vs. Prey
Join a park naturalist and some of the park’s animal ambassadors to discover why their roles in the ecosystem are so important. Explore the adaptations that determine an animal’s place in the food chain and the importance of predators and prey in nature. Students will play a fun game to test their skills.

Bear Necessities
Join a Park Ranger to begin your adventure into the basics of black bears. What do bears eat? Where do they live? Do they hibernate during the NC winters? And will they attack? Let’s answer these and other common questions about one of the largest mammals in our woods.

Magical Migration
This engaging program introduces the process of migration and what makes it so magical. Students will learn how species in their own backyard make an incredible journey in order to survive. At the end of the program, a fun activity lets everyone experience migration for themselves.

Meet a Tree
Get to know our amazing forest neighbors—trees! Learn how these natural giants can live for over 100 years and the incredible changes they undergo to prepare for winter. Plus, find out which animals depend on trees for a cozy shelter during the chilly months

Afternoon Exploration – Begins at 1:30pm

Self-Guided Hikes and Discovery Stations
Hike any of our six trails, ranging in difficulty from easy to moderately strenuous.

Look out for park naturalists at two Discovery Stations as you hike. Each Discovery Station will engage students in a topic relevant to the park and the natural world around us.

Before you head out on your adventure, ask our knowledgeable staff which trail is the best fit for you.
